BRAND FOCUS   In 2017, Patton Design was engaged to redefine the user experience for the WaterLase Express™ Laser System, supporting its FDA clearance and global launch. The objective was to translate Biolase’s advanced laser technology into a highly intuitive, clinically empowering interface that would enable dentists and surgeons to fully harness its capabilities—making it the first GUI in a removable tablet that dentists and surgeons could use for case studies.

SUCCESS   Patton Design developed a revolutionary graphical user interface built around a color-coded circular navigation system organized into six clear procedural categories: Restorative, Soft Tissue, Perio, Implant, Endo, and Customizable Favorites. Each category is represented by unique visual icons linked to specialized treatment algorithms.

The interface accommodates both novice and advanced clinicians through dual operating modes, including a Simple Mode with integrated educational animations and an Advanced Mode for expert-level control. The system is operated via a removable Samsung tablet, enabling portability, offline learning, and seamless clinical integration.

Extensive human factors testing was conducted with specialists across each discipline to refine workflow clarity, usability, and interaction efficiency.

RESULTS   The WaterLase Express™ Laser System successfully received FDA clearance for worldwide launch.

The interface was widely praised by clinical specialists for its ease of use, intuitive architecture, and streamlined workflow. By transforming complex laser functionality into an accessible, customizable platform, Patton Design strengthened both regulatory confidence and practitioner adoption.
