MERCEDES BENZ

BRAND FOCUS   Patton Design was recommended to Mercedes-Benz by leading German audio and video innovators, including Grundig and Loewe, following earlier collaboration with Audi. The engagement centered on envisioning the future of driver infotainment and interaction systems.

Doug Patton was tasked with looking well beyond current automotive standards to define next-generation control architectures. The mandate was to harmonize emerging digital technologies with timeless human priorities—safety, intuitive control, driving enjoyment, and intelligent assistance.

The objective was not simply interface refinement, but a reimagining of how drivers interact with information inside the vehicle.

SUCCESS   Patton Design developed a series of forward-looking concept studies, initially expressed through advanced sketches and later realized as animated 3D visualizations of the driving experience.

Comprehensive human factors mockups were created to refine intuitive information control strategies. This exploration led to the development of ergonomic hand-rest and center-console concepts that anticipated modern in-vehicle interaction models.

In parallel, software interaction frameworks were conceived, including driver alert systems, display personalization architectures, and advanced information navigation logic—many of which informed later implementation strategies.

RESULTS   The work contributed to the evolution of Mercedes-Benz infotainment design, influencing both physical control architecture and digital interaction philosophy.

By integrating human factors rigor with visionary interface strategy, Patton Design helped shape a more intuitive, driver-centered approach to in-vehicle information systems—advancing the trajectory of automotive UX design.
