BRAND FOCUS   Following Doug Patton’s involvement in ABC’s American Inventor television series, he began collaborating with Disney’s Global Patent division on strategic invention initiatives. Recognizing his expertise in intellectual property strategy and product innovation, Disney engaged him to redesign a high-volume, globally distributed product used across all theme parks: the handheld cooling spray bottle.

The objective was to overcome patent constraints, reduce vendor dependency, improve guest ergonomics, and deliver a more cost-effective manufacturing solution—without compromising brand experience.

SUCCESS   Disney’s existing spray bottle incorporated a battery-operated fan controlled by restrictive third-party patents, resulting in inflated costs and limited design flexibility. Patton Design conducted a detailed competitive patent analysis and identified an opportunity to engineer a new, proprietary invention.

Doug developed a novel design that bypassed existing patent claims while improving manufacturing efficiency, aesthetic quality, and ergonomic comfort. The result was a simplified, patent-protected solution that enhanced guest usability and production scalability.

RESULTS   The redesigned product generated savings of over $10 million annually, translating into hundreds of millions of dollars in long-term profitability for Disney.

Based on the success of this initiative, Disney commissioned Doug to develop a faux flame candle for the Haunted House attraction. Based upon the candle’s patent, Disney partnered with Doug to market the Candella and Luminara faux-flame candle technologies—further expanding Patton Design’s role in high-impact intellectual property development. This venture is creating $20 million annually with international sales.
